Detour to a better life
Justin grew up in a world filled with gangs and dropouts. One of his parents was deceased, and the other was incarcerated. Justin lived with his grandmother.
Although he could have easily followed in the footsteps of the kids in his neighborhood, Justin received a positive intervention in the form of a Lazydays Lighthouse Scholarship. In return for his promise to remain drug and crime free, the Lazydays Employee Foundation awarded him the opportunity for a higher education. He is now following his dream of becoming a chef.
As a high school senior, Justin has maintained a grade point average above 3.0. Instead of joining one of his neighborhood gangs, he takes part in his high school debate team and mentors other kids to help them, too, find a better route in life.
As Justin told a group of Lazydays employees, "I couldn't have succeeded without the scholarship you're providing me." Justin now hopes to give other kids the same opportunity he's received. He believes that if more kids could follow their dreams, fewer of them would follow gang leaders.
